Itinerary

Early in the morning, we will pick you up at your hotel or at the agreed meeting point in Santa Marta to embark on a journey to the heart of magical realism. After a two-hour drive through the landscapes of the Colombian Caribbean, you will arrive in Aracataca, the village that inspired Gabriel García Márquez and that the world knew as Macondo.

The experience begins at the old train station, where echoes of times past still resonate and where the monument to Remedios the Beautiful stands—an ethereal figure that seems suspended in the air, just like in the pages of One Hundred Years of Solitude. Here you will learn the first glimpses of Gabo's story, while having time for photos and connection with the literary landscape.

You will walk along the Macondo Linear Park, a route filled with symbols and references to the Nobel laureate's work. Then you will visit the Montessori School, where little Gabriel took his first steps in reading and writing—an intimate space that preserves the essence of his beginnings.

The tour will then take you to the Gabriel García Márquez House Museum, the home of his grandparents and the cradle of the stories that would later transform world literature. You will walk through its halls and feel the atmosphere that inspired the boy Gabo to create his own universe.

You will also pass by the San José Church, where the writer was baptized, and later by the Telegrapher's House, a place full of antique objects and literary pieces, where his father, Gabriel Eligio García, worked. Each stop is a direct connection to the author's life and work.

At midday, you will enjoy a typical lunch at a local restaurant, with authentic flavors of the region.

After a day full of history, literature, and culture, we will begin the return to Santa Marta with souls full of images and words that, as in Macondo, will seem to have been suspended in time.

General environment conditions – Aracataca

• Climate: Aracataca has a hot and dry climate, with temperatures ranging from 28 °C to 36 °C. Prepare for the intense Caribbean sun: hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen will be your best allies.
• Humidity: Moderate, but the heat can feel strong during the urban tour. Stay hydrated and bring your reusable water bottle.
• Physical demand: Low. The tour is mostly by vehicle with short walks within the village. Still, the climate can cause fatigue if you are not prepared.
• Electricity and connectivity: Aracataca has basic services, but in some heritage spaces (such as the house museum), connectivity or outlets may be limited. If you need to keep your devices charged, consider bringing an external battery.
• Cultural respect: You are visiting a place steeped in history, where the memory of Gabriel García Márquez is a living part of the landscape. Be respectful of spaces, ask before taking photos, and value both the physical and intangible heritage shared with you.

Itinerary

We start from the tourist dock, board a boat that slowly takes us into the heart of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta Fauna and Flora Sanctuary. As we sail through the channels, the landscape transforms: exotic birds cross the sky, the reflection of the sun dances on the water, and silence fills with the song of nature.

Soon Buenavista appears, like a floating mirage. The brightly painted wooden houses seem to float gently on the water. Here, there are no asphalt streets; there is water. And paths are traveled by canoe or small wooden boats. We disembark to explore the village and visit its lookout tower, from which the swamp is seen in all its majesty.

On solid ground—or rather, on solid stilts—we share with local residents, who open their homes and hearts to us. We learn about their traditional fishing techniques, how they read the water and know the wind. We listen to stories about how life is lived when every step is an oar and every roof is shelter from tropical rains.

We continue sailing until we reach Nueva Venecia, a place that seems taken from a dream. Here, the stilt culture feels even more alive. We are welcomed with smiles and the promise of a delicious lunch: fresh fish or another protein, cooked as it has been for generations, with love, wood fire, and Caribbean seasoning.

If the group wishes, magical moments can arise: a dance workshop, a drumming circle, a space for cultural exchange where we are all learners and hosts.

After a day full of learning, flavors, and human connections, we begin the return journey along the same water path that brought us, but we are no longer the same. The Ciénaga, its villages, and its people have left us something we will carry forever.
