Itinerary

Small town located near the mouth of Don Diego river, it shelters within its boundaries a part of one of the indigenous reservations of Sierra Nevada, with Tayrona terraces and trail that connect the coast to the mountains. Taking a boat for just 5 minutes on the river, you have access to Taironaka, a place where archaeological remains of the first inhabitants of Santa Marta region are possible to be observed.

The river’s sandy banks make bathing very enjoyable, with fresh waters coming from the mountains, and the opportunity of tubing or going down the river with the big, so-called “donuts”, an activity that has gained a lot of popularity among locals and visitors.

To complete the picture, you will be surrounded by humid tropical forest and tall trees – up to 40 meters high -, and by the greenery of its exuberant landscape, refreshing and crystal clear water. Don Diego’s area can count on accommodation facilities and restaurants too. Don Diego includes within its boundaries an archaeological site known as Taironaka.

Since it is an archaeological park, it is the ideal place for hiking, observing the typical fauna and flora of Sierra Nevada’s mountains, along with pieces of indigenous and lithic pottery; it also allows you to have access to one of the rivers that descend from Sierra Nevada, Don Diego river.

Taironaka is located in what used to be an ancient Tairona settlement; here you will be able to observe archaeological remains such as terraces or housing rings, retaining walls, stone trails and an indigenous house with a palm-leaves roof, mud walls, and “bahareque”, that is temporarily inhabited by Kogui natives as they pass through the ancient city of their ancestors, the Taironas.

ACTIVITIES

Descent in kayak or tubing by the river: a walk in the nature along the path “following Tairona’s footprint”, gives us the opportunity to enjoy Don Dieguito, a natural setting that receives its name for being the only place in Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta where you can choose if you want to bathe in warm waters, or in cold waters of Don Diego River that descend from the snowy peaks; in this place the elements of this unique landscape are the main attraction.

Enjoy the beautiful views while descending through the refreshing waters of Don Diego River, spotting howler monkeys, herons and a whole set of endemic animals that make this tour a significant experience for each and every one of our visitors.

As the only requirement, we suggest wearing comfortable shoes, suitable for water too, bringing sunscreen and the best spirit, in order to get to discover the charms of this region through an itinerary completely designed for resting and relaxing.

With the company of a tourist guide, you will enjoy a descent by tubing down Don Diego river observing trees that are 20 to 30 meters high, listening to the sounds of nature until you reach Taironaka, an archaeological museum surrounded by terraces, housing rings, stone paths and a hut that represents the building style of Tairona’s houses, back in this ancient population’s times.

After enjoying a typical lunch of the region, the tour continues along Don Diego river, but this time you will feel adrenaline and enjoy some sport by taking a kayak: you will not be alone, since howler monkeys, toucans, migratory birds and locals will accompany you until you reach the mouth of the river, connecting with the Caribbean Sea.

The return will be by boat till Taironaka’s parking lot. The ecological trails of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta offer you the experience of rediscovering nature, while learning about indigenous beliefs, cultural and ancestral legacy at the very same time.
